LIB 5900 December 4

Well, this is my last official day in the library (I will still be helping while Mrs. Leslie is out).  Today, I shelved books (again!) and spent some time talking with Mrs. Yarbro about what all I had done this semester.  It seemed like at first, I was doing quite a bit but lately it has seemed to slack off as far as the technical part of the librarian job goes.  I have still been busy but it’s been mainly working the circulation counter and helping students that come in.  And even though I have been busy, I have felt like there were a lot of things I didn’t get to do.  Mrs. Yarbro made a valid point in saying there are differences between a school and a public library….many of the things I will experience at the public library aren’t things that are done in an elementary school.  She is confident I can handle a librarian position but again stressed it’s a lot different.  She has been most helpful and willing to share any knowledge and resources she has…..of course, I told her she has to since it was her suggestion I apply to the MLS program in the first place!

LIB 5900 December 3

Well, today was very busy at the circulation counter.  No one had shelved books at the end of the day Friday so I had all the returns from Friday afternoon plus all of Monday mornings so I scanned and shelved for quite some time.  When the kindergarten class came in, I checked their books in and when they were ready to leave, I helped them check their books out.  I also helped a fourth grader find a couple series of books she was interested in (she wants to read all the books in the series).  We listed all 22 books and highlighted the ones she had already read.  We then found books for her to check out that she hadn’t read.  I printed the list for her so she would have it whenever she came to the library.

Mrs. Yarbro was at a workshop today and had a substitute.  I worked the circulation desk; helping with check in and out; and shelved books.  I also helped the sub with the Smart Board during the kindergarten lesson.  She did the story but wasn’t sure how to navigate the Smart Board.

Mrs. Yarbro showed me the coolest thing today.  I have been working on a couple of resource lists to give her but she showed me how I can do the lists through the school library search page.  I can compile the lists; showing the resources at our library; indicate the grade and AR level, show the cover of the book, and tell whether the book is currently available.  The lists are placed on the search page so any student or teacher can have access to them.  After I finished checking in and shelving the books that came, I worked on some lists.  I made a list from the Democracy and Voting pathfinder I have her plus a Christmas Around the World and a Christmas Holiday books list.

I spent the morning shelving books and helping students check books in and out.  I also scan the books for the kindergarten class that Mrs. Yarbro was working with.   Each kindergarten teacher brings her class’s books to the library during their media lesson so the smaller children don’t have to come to the library by themselves.  Once the lesson was over, I helped the class find the purple dot books (indicates kindergarten level) and get them checked out.  They are still learning how to log into the circulation computer and scan their books.

I have been scheduled to cover the media assistant’s job for an hour everyday until she gets back.  I will be shelving books, helping children find books, and aiding in checking in and out.  I will be rotating with the computer lab assistant to help since Mrs. Yarbro still has classes scheduled but she doesn’t want to close open book check out.

LIB 5900 November 19

Today I shelved books for what seemed like forever.  The media assistant has been pulled to cover for someone on medical leave and Mrs. Yarbro still has classes going on so the books were piling up.  I went in while my class was at their media lesson and check in and shelved books.  The 5th grade media helpers weren’t scheduled to come in until after lunch so I wanted to get the counter as cleared as I could.
